Oregon Tour Report: Move To Amend is on the Move!

Move to Amend

Move to Amend spokesperson David Cobb and Field Support Liaison Margaret Koster of Democracy Unlimited barnstormed across the state of Oregon from June 12 to 20.

The “anchor” stops were two full day training sessions—one in Eugene and another in Portland.  These participatory workshops are designed to provide folks with the concrete tools needed to challenge the corporate control of our political, economic and legal institutions.

The foundation of the training is an examination of "Corporate Personhood.” It includes small group sessions, role playing and LOTS of engaged participation. Contact us if you would like to host one!

The goals of these trainings are to ensure that participants

1) Understand the strategy and goals of the Move to Amend campaign.

2) Be able to explain the concept of Corporate Personhood to others in their community to involve more people in their group and movement.

3) Be ready to organize with the Move to Amend affiliate group in their community or start a new group in their town.

David and Margaret also gave well-attended presentations in Roseberg, Ashland, Florence, Salem, and Hood River.  After the presentation, they engaged in facilitated discussion sessions that sometimes lasted over two hours.  In some communities folks didn’t want to leave!

Once again, valuable media contacts were made along the trip, and these contacts were shared with local organizers.  KBOO community radio in Portland interviewed David several times, and newly forming KMUZ in Salem recorded the presentation.

Check out this very insightful article in the News-Review of Roseberg.

MTA presentations were filmed at several stops and will be broadcast on local cable access affiliates, and David taped a segment for “The Populist Dialogues,” a program hosted by David Delk of the Portland Alliance for Democracy.

As a direct result, of the tour, we added over 300 new names to the Move to Amend petition, and we identified folks willing to organize affiliates in every one of these cities, and it seems clear that Eugene and Portland folks want to run citizen initiatives!
