Throw some light on election spending - call your Senators today!

The clock is ticking on the chance to force some sunshine into election spending. The small window of opportunity for this “lame duck” session of Congress to do something positive is closing fast, before the new Congress is sworn in.  That is why we are asking you to join us in asking Congress to pass the DISCLOSE Act -- because Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections.  Passing the DISCLOSE Act will help us all follow the money.
This bill helps respond to the 5-4 Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. FEC. As you know, that outrageous decision overturned decades of precedent governing corporations, allowing for-profit companies and other special interests to spend unlimited sums in advertising to influence elections.  This money is distorting and drowning out the voices of We the People.
The DISCLOSE Act would require all organizations making political expenditures to name their donors. This would allow voters to know the corporations and individuals hiding behind front groups with feel-good names.  Deep pockets like Big Pharma, Big Oil and Coal, and Wall Street should not be allowed to hide their funding of misleading election ads.
This bill was developed by Democratic leaders in the House and Senate with the White House earlier this year to help address the fallout from the Supreme Court’s activist and illegitimate decision.  The bill’s sponsors hoped to pass it by July 4, so it would take effect in time for the 2010 mid-term elections. It passed the House in June, but in July Republicans blocked the bill in the Senate.
Please call your Senators today, and ask them to insist that this bill be passed before this Congress ends.  You can reach them through the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 by telling the operator your state’s name or by visiting the Congressional Directory web page.
Move to Amend supports this legislation. It is a necessary, although incomplete, step toward addressing corporate influence and ensuring greater transparency.  As you know, Move to Amend believes that even stronger remedies are needed to end corporate control of our democracy:  amending the Constitution.  Beyond the DISCLOSE Act, we have a great and important task ahead of us, to affirm that inalienable constitutional rights are for human beings only, not for corporations.  That effort is going to take much longer than this lame duck session of Congress this month.
So in the meantime, please join us in contacting your elected representatives in Washington, DC, and demanding that they vote FOR the DISCLOSE Act and help shine a light on the corporate spending that is corrupting our elections and undermining our democracy.
