The Ultimate Gift: Real Democracy!

Jan 20, 2012: Occupy the CourtsIn this article, Joshua Holland encourages Occupy Wall Street (OWS) to “direct their energy not only at Wall Street, but also at its enablers, in Congress, and ultimately, at the high court.”

That is exactly what Move to Amend intends to do on January 20,  at the Supreme Court and other federal courthouses, in a one day  event dubbed “Occupy the Courts.”

Help make “Occupy the Courts” a success!

We’re not just borrowing the name; MTA members have been  participating in general assemblies at Occupy sites across the US.  Occupy participants recognize that corporate personhood is responsible for the problems that ail the 99%, and many plan to occupy the courts with us!

This is no small undertaking:

  • Planning is well underway for events at the Supreme Court and over 30 other cities,
with more events added every day.
  • Speakers and entertainers are being contacted.
  • Materials are being prepared for printing and distribution.
  • Permits are being pulled.
  • Outreach is being performed.
  • Promotion for the event is underway.

Help make “Occupy the Courts” a success!

There are big expenses involved:

  • Sound systems need to be rented.
  • Materials need to be printed and distributed.
  • Travel expenses need to be covered.
  • Event organizers require administrative and financial help.

We’re counting on you to help us meet our funding goal of $20,000.  There could be no better demonstration of our anger and frustration with a system geared for the 1% than successful events at all 94 federal courts. Based on the initial support from OWS and our own members, it is apparent that Move to Amend - Occupy the Courts is an idea whose time has come.

What could be a better gift to the next generation of Americans than a democracy that works for them instead of the privileged few?

Instead of that big TV this Christmas, why not contribute $1500 to Move to Amend? In the end, your kids will thank you for it!

Too rich for your blood? No contribution is too small; we’ll gratefully accept $500, $250, $100, or $50.  Instead of a movie and popcorn with your partner, think of the difference just $25 can make?

On the second anniversary of the Citizen’s United decision, we need to make the obvious clear to the courts: Corporations are not people and money is not speech. Help us do it—please make a contribution today

In solidarity,

Ben Manski, David Cobb, George Friday, Jerome Scott, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, Laura Bonham,
Lisa Graves, and Nancy Price
